Thread: Does anyone have Samantha's Summer Amusements?

    Question

I was thinking of attempting to make Samantha's Summer Amusement set, but I'm at a loss for her sketchbook. I think the paint case can be made out of balsa wood & stained and I think I can find the paints & brush to fit the box. Curt's site shows her sketchbook and it looks like there are drawings in it. Does the sketchbook indeed have pictures or sketches and if so what are they of? Are they scenes from the pictures in the book?

I would also like to find her sketchbook. The part of her summer story where she finds it is my absolute favorite!

Kim, if you look in Samantha Saves the Day there are pictures in it (p. 24-25, 37, 57). Maybe you could try to paint them in miniature, or scan them. (If you own the original and don't plan on selling it, hopefully scanning would be okay ?) I believe these are the same ones that came in the sketchbook.

Thanks Melissa I don't have the original set and really don't want to spend the money to get it. (We've sort of stretched the doll budget a little too much lately . I've got tons of stamping stuff to create an aged look to paper items and I know I can make a sketchbook. I think you are right, if they are the pictures it would be really easy to recreate them. I think seeing all the things you have mande for your dolls has got my creativity flowing. In a weird sort of way it is even more fun that buying the stuff. DH has even offered to help. When we have more room I am thinking about making my own scenes and settings from the pictures in the books. I've dabbled in trompe l'oleil so maybe I could make them seem real. Of course that projct will have to wait a little while.

As I recall (haven't read Sam's books in awhile), the sketchbook belonged to her Mom, who made tiny sketches on several pages that relate to where the family summers.

    Kim,

I checked in a 1991 catalog. The sketchbook is partly open and contains the same pictures that appear in her book. The write-up says: "...paint pictures just like her mother had done in a sketchbook when she was a girl at Piney Point long ago. There are blank pages for you to paint in, too."

It seems like it would be super-easy to make since so many pages are blank! Have fun!

It seems like the sketchbook would be the easiest part of the thing to do, and fun, too! You'll have a great time! It seems like with each collection you can either find something very similar at a craft store, make it, or find something elsewhere that will work. You can always be on the lookout for something that will work.

I always thought Samantha's collection would be the most difficult since her collection is so fancy and unique. Maybe it's the best collection to try to replicate for people who love a good challenge!

there are 6 pages that are already "painted" and then there are blank pages for the girl to paint in. The pre-painted pictures are of Samantha as a toddler and her mother and father doing activities at teardrop island (swimming in the waterfall, eating a picnic lunch etc). I would scan the pictures from my copy, but my book is at my parents house, far far away.

Well that figures The auction I saw for Samantha's Summer Amusements is already up to $67. Well, I can't make a true sketchbook, but Samantha will just have to have a original one of her own! Thanks for all the help and for the offer to scan the pictures. I really appreciate it

If you just want a blank sketchbook, look in an art suppy store. They make pocket sized sketchbooks that are about the right scale for the dolls. They are sometimes called field books.
